How the Program Works
2012 Update

Due to timing at the end of the year, the last match being held on the last meeting date and that being the same day SOY is awarded. A decision was made to roll the scores from the last match (Dec. Iron Match) into the following years calculations. 2012 will start off with the previous December Match and go until the last November Match...

2011 Updates
The Shooter of the Year (SOY) program began in May of 2008 and was split into three categories:
High Power - Long Range,   High Power - Cross Course,  and   F-Class.
These three broad categories include the Mid-Range matches.

Starting 2011:
The High Power - Long Range will be split into Palma Rifle, Match Rifle and Any/Any-Tactical Rifle
F-Class will be separated into F/TR and F/Open
All Service Rifle match scores will continue to be posted in the Cross Course section.

This yearly program rewards shooters based on participation, consistency, and performance within each shooter's class. For example; a Sharpshooter that consistently performs at the top of his/her class can win the Shooter of the Year in a particular discipline over a Highmaster.

The program format:

  • Shooters must be a current member of NSSC in good standing to be eligible.
All current members of NSSC are automatically enrolled.
All new members joining before June 30 will be eligible and their scores for the entire year will be eligible.

  • There must be at least three (3) shooters in a particular classification (all three do not need to be NSSC members) for SOY match points to be awarded. If there are not three shooters of the same classification, shooters will be moved up to the next highest level to form a group.
In the case of only one or two HighMasters, they are eligible for the overall winner only, no other points will be awarded for second, third.....

  • FYI:
Individuals shooting Service Rifle out to 600 yards will always have their scores entered in the High Power - Cross Course category. If you choose to shoot a Service Rifle beyond 600 yards, those scores will be entered in the High Power - Long Range section as ANY/ANY.
If you shoot a Match Rifle and it is NOT a Cross Course Match, those scores will be entered in High Power - Long Range section BUT starting in 2011, Match Rifle will have it's own category and not be aggregated with the PALMA shooters.
Match Rifles shot Cross Course will be entered in the Cross Course section.
PALMA rifles are always in the High Power - Long Range Section.
F-Class rifles are always in the F-Class section; starting 2011, F/TR and F/Open are separate

  • The SOY points system is as follows:
    Overall Winner 12 Points
    1st Place  10 Points
    2nd Place   8 Points
    3rd Place   6 Points
    4th Place   4 Points
    5th Place   2 Points
High Junior and High Senior also receive 10 points -
No, you can't get double points for being 1st and HJ or HS - BUT -
if you are 2nd, 3rd... and High Junior or High Senior, you get the higher value.

  • The administration of the points will be based on the posted match results.

  • For SOY, there will be an overall winner declared in each match category.

  • Shooter of the Year awards are presented at the annual membership meeting.
